The academic conference and expert consultation of the Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Science were held in the Science Building, A302 of Zhong Shan North Road Campus, East China Normal University, on November 29th. More than 20 distinguished researchers, including National Distinguished Young Scholars, Chang Jiang Scholar and National Excellent Young Scholars, are invited: Chen Min (Vice President of the Chinese Mathematical Society, Researcher of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), He Shuyuan, (Former Chairman of the Chinese Society of Probability and Statistics, Professor of Capital Normal University), Liu Yang (Member of the Evaluation Section of the Statistics Department of the State Council Degree Office,Professor of Central University of Finance and Economics), Sun Liuquan, (Researcher of the Chinese Academy of Sciences); and also the members of the Statistics Education Committee of the Ministry of Education, which includes: Tang Niansheng (Dean of the School of Statistics and Mathematics, Professor of Yunnan University), Lin Jinguan (Dean of School of Statistics, Nanjing Audit University), Zhang Hu, (Dean of School of Statistics, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law), Zheng Ming (Associate Dean of School of Management, Fudan University), Shi Lei (Dean of School of Statistics, Yunnan University of Finance and Economics),Yang Ying (Professor of Tsinghua University), Wang Xueqin (Professor of Sun Yat-sen University), etc.; in addition, Ji Hong (Dean of the Institute of Mathematics, Capital University of Economics and Business), Lin Huazhen (Director of the Statistics Center of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics), Zhu Zhongyi (Fudan University), Yue Rongxian (Shanghai Normal University), Feng Xingdong (Shanghai University of Finance and Economics), Li Xuechun (President of Beijing Capitek Co., Ltd), Zhao Peng (Dean of School of Mathematics and Statistics, Jiangsu Normal University), You Jinhong (Associate Dean of School of Statistics, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics), Yanyan Liu (Wuhan University), Liu Yonghui (Dean of the School of Statistics and Information, Shanghai University of International Business and Economics), etc. The conference discussed the discipline construction for Statistics, along with relevant academic talks. Professor Zhang Riquan, the Dean of the School of Statistics, was the chair of the committee for the conference and Professor Li Zhibin, the vice president of ECNU, also attended the conference.

Speech by Vice President Li Zhibin
In the opening speech, Li Zhibin, on behalf the school, welcomed the guests to the seminar. He introduced that East China Normal University became Class A University in 2017, and Statistics is one of the three first-grade disciplines in ECNU. The Statistics department of ECNU was originally build upon probability theory and mathematical statistics, and has being prosperous developed by the leading scholars over the past decades, including Wei Zongshu, Mao Shisong, He Shengwu and Wang Jinglong , etc. From the stand point of view of constructing first-class university and first-class discipline, and reforming ECNU’s current research environment, ECNU established the Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences to facilitate the development of research in Statistics. Li Zhibin appreciated the supports from all attending experts, and hope everyone will continue to provide suggestions and helps to the Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences.

Professor He Shuyuan emphasized in his speech that it is of great significance for interdisciplinary research between statistics and other disciplines, especially through the platform provided by the Faculty of Economics and Management. The cross-integration with economics, business management and other disciplines not only facilitate the development of Statistics, but also the development of other disciplines.

Chen Min thanked the leaders of East China Normal University for supporting the Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences. Chen Min mentioned that Professor Zhou Yong, who is the executive associate director of the Department of Economics and Management of East China Normal University, the dean of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Science of Statistics, National Distinguished Young Scholar, Chang Jiang Scholar, has rich experience in interdisciplinary research development. Chen Min believed that under the leadership of Professor Zhou Yong, the Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences will definitely have a bright future.

Professor Zhou Yong expressed his warm welcome to the attending experts in the speech, introduced the establishment process of the Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences, explained its important role in discipline construction, and illustrated the core objectives and the management of the Academy.
Zhou Yong said that he will spend all his efforts in building the Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences, hoping that all the attending experts can recommend brilliant and innovative young scholars to join the Institute, and develop the Statistical discipline together.
After the opening ceremony, Professor Tang Niansheng, Professor Wang Xueqin, Professor Zhu Zhongyi, Professor Feng Xingdong and Professor Yu Zhou gave inspirational academic reports.
During the afternoon of the 29th, Professor Ji Hong chaired the Forum of Statistics Department Construction. All conference participants as well as some professors from the School of Statistics and the Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences have joined the discussion that focuses on the development trend of modern statistics, the interdisciplinary study of statistics and other disciplines, the challenges and opportunities of statistics in the era of Big Data and the current cross disciplines integrations in the Faculty of Economics and Management.
This academic conference and expert consultation is the first conference held since the establishment of the Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences. It is of far-reaching significance which signals to the academia that Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences is ready to set sail for the exploration of Statistics.
