During October 26-27, the2019 Conference on Data Science Theory and Method was held in Nanning, Guangxi. The conference was hosted by Data Science Branch of Chinese Society of Optimization, Overall Planning and Economic Mathematics, organized by School of Information and Statistics at Guangxi University of Finance and Economics, and co-organized by Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Sciences at East China Normal University. Present were President of Chinese Society of Optimization, Overall Planning and Economic Mathematics CHI Hong, Vice president ZHOU Yong, President of Guangxi University of Finance and Economics XIA Fei, Vice president ZENG Fanping, and more than 140 statisticians and data scientists from over 40 institutes across the country.
opening ceremony
On October 26, the opening ceremony was held at the lecture hall of Yicheng Hotel at Nanning, Guangxi. RUAN jing, Vice Dean ofGraduate School and School of Statistics at Capital University of Economics and Business, introduced the attendees first. President of Guangxi University of Finance and Economics XIA Fei then warmly welcomed the attendees on behalf of the university, sharing the university’s development of disciplines and scientific research. President of the Society CHI Hong expressed his congratulation on the successful opening of the conference. Dean of School of Information and Statistics at Guangxi University of Finance and Economics JIANG Caoqing addressed the audience with his welcome remarks on behalf of the institute. In the end, Vice president of the Society ZHOU Yong introduced the new branch. He pointed out that the establishment of data science branch is a significant event at this very moment of developing interdisciplinary sciences and would promote mutual development across Statistics and other disciplines such as Biomedical Science, Economics, Management and Computer Science. He gave thanks to all the colleagues who has contributed to the establishment of the branch and the conference.

The conference was followed by invited talks, which were given by 22 distinguished scholars including Professor LIN Huazhen of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics，Professor LI Zhongfei of Sun yat-sen University, Professor ZOU Guohua of Capital Normal University, Professor ZHANG Xinyu of Chinese Academy of Sciences，Professor LIU Weidong of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professor WANG Zhen of Northwestern Polytechnical University, Professor ZHANG Yuejun of Hunan University, etc. The conference covered a large range of hot topics of big data and modern statistics, which were separated by seven sessions: big data and high-dimensional data, big data and statistics, big data and financial information, big data and medical science, big data and economics, big data and behavior science, and electronic commerce.

first council of Data Science Branch
On October 27, the first council and supervisory committee of the Data Science Branch was elected at the conference. President of the council is ZHOU Yong, vice president includes WANG Zhen, LIU Weidong, RUAN Jing, ZHANG Feipeng, ZHANG Xinyu, CAO Xianbing, ZENG Fanping, and secretary general is YU Zhou. In total, the council has 51 members, out of which 26 are executive members. The supervisory committee has 11 members and YOU Jinhong is the president.
First Supervisory committee of Data Science Branch
After the election, the first meeting of all members of Data Science Branch was held and chaired by president of the council ZHOU Yong. The members discussed future work in the next few years and decided GuiZhou University of Finance and Economics as the organizer of the next meeting. The members all expressed their desire to contribute to the Society. This conference provided a high-quality platform for scholars to communicate big data issue. At the end of the conference, attendees offered sincere wishes and congratulations to the Data Science Branch, and thanks to the host, the organizer and co-organizer.
