On April 18The Academy of Statistics and Interdisciplinary Science hosted the first Forum of Frontiers Research Topics in Statistics at the Science Building A1514, North Zhong Shan Road. Numerous distinguished researchers have joined the forum, including: Chen Min (Vice President of the Chinese Mathematical Society, Researcher of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), Liu Yang (Member of Statistics Department of the State Council Degree Office,Professor of Central University of Finance and Economics), Sun Liuquan (Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences), Ji Hong (Dean of the Institute of Big Data and Statistics Science, Capital University of Economics and Business), Zhang Baoxue (Dean of School of Statistics, Capital University of Economics and Business), Li Yuan (School of Economics and Statistics, Guangzhou University), and Wu Yaohua (School of Management, University of Science and Technology of China). The forum discussed the applications of Statistics in Engineering, Aerospace, Biomedicine, Education and Psychology, Economics, Finance and Management, and Humanities and Social Sciences.

The attending experts emphasized on the major challenge in the cross-disciplinary research is the lack of experts with multi-disciplinary backgrounds, for example, professors in Finance are generally less familiar with Mathematics, Statistics and Artificial Intelligence. However, when solving real-life problems in, for instances, Economics, Finance, Resources and Environment, it is often appropriate to utilize the techniques in Artificial Intelligence. The forum highlights the necessity in redefining what topics should be considered as interdisciplinary topics, as most existing disciplines cover a wide range of topics. To mention a few, Economics includes two first-grade disciplines, Applied Economics and Theoretical Economics, where Applied Economics alone contains 10 second-grade disciplines; Management Science includes more than two first-grade disciplines, Business Management and Management and Science Engineering, where Business Management itself has four second-grade disciplines. Since Statistics is not included as the first-level discipline, research integration with Economics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics will be essential for the future success of the Faculty of Economics and Management.

The forum has the following objectives. First, to carry out academic discussions in statistical theory, methods and applications in the interdisciplinary fields of Resources, Environment, Ecology, Business Management, Economics and Finance, Management Science and Engineering. Second, possible solutions are being proposed to resolve the difficulties faced by the current interdisciplinary researchers. Third, the forum redefines the scope of statistical interdisciplinary research, which builds the foundation for the successful research integration in the future.
